Is there any reason why prisons can’t generate revenue for themselves?
1) Teach prisoners professional skills
2) Employ these skills in the prisons’ revenue generating endeavors
3) Help these skilled individuals find steady employment once their sentences are over.
The punishment: Criminals serve their time AND work to pay for their own cost of being in the prison system.
The benefits to society: Pre-release: Making budget shortfalls irrelevant. Post release: Higher rehabilitation rates, maybe? Less recidivism?
Put them in tent cities wearing pink clothes, drawers and socks. Take away ALL privileges, coffee, cigarettes, etc and give them nothing but 3 hots, a cot and whole lot of hard labor, maybe that will reduce the prison population in itself. Who would want to spend a life like that?
But the way the system is now, as soon as a prisoner gets out they do something to go right back because they have it made, 3 hots, a cot, tv, playstation, movies, library, etc, I mean we are causing the mess ourselves because we are waaaaay to lenient.
Let me be sheriff for 2 weeks, I guarantee those prisoners would never step out of line again to come back, they would rather scratch their hind end with a broke coca cola bottle than to go back to sheriff rod’s prison lol
